Highlights
Corbett has the proud distinction of being chosen as the first venue for the inauguration of Project Tiger in India. Nestling in the foothills of the Himalayas, along the banks of the Ramganga River, Corbett Tiger Reserve offers different kinds of vegetation all along its varied topography. Forest consists of mixed deciduous and sal forest interspersed with Savannah grassland. The grasslands locally known as Chaurs, are limited. The largest grassland is the Dhikala Chaur. Some of the best grasslands including the famous Buxar Chaur and the Beri Chaur got submerged under the Ramganga reservoir in 1974. The Corbett Tiger Reserve has a great variety of fauna on account of habitat diversity. It is very rich in avifauna. Zoological Survey of India has recorded over 585 species of resident and migratory birds here. Nainital A small town in the hills of Kumaon, Nainital is a lovely hill station surrounded by mountains on three sides. Once this area had many lakes and it was called the City of 60 lakes or Chakta. Most of the lakes in the region have disappeared and whatever remains is just a glimpse of what they might have been in the past. Pangot Pangot is small village 15 kilometers from Nainital (Uttarakhand, India), the drive takes only 25 minutes to get there. The entire drive is through the forested area of Cheena Peak Range via Snow View Point and Kilbury, the main habitats for excellent birding. One can see a variety of Himalayan species along the way such as lammergeier, Himalayan griffon, blue winged minla, spotted & slaty-backed forktail, rufous bellied woodpecker, rufous-bellied niltava, khalij pheasant, variety of thrushes etc. Almost 150 bird species have been recorded at Pangot and surrounding areas. There are number of Birding lodges that have been set up for those interested in Birding, Walks and a nature centric experience.
